No hitting the snooze alarm multiple times for Lisa Beaver. Instead, the medical biller at Siouxland Community Health Center said, the “nurturing environment and culture of respect and caring” at SCHC make it easy to come to work every day. She feels a deep sense of satisfaction and pride in her job. “I want to get up early and come to work,” she said. “I’ve never said that before about any job.”
SCHC is a federally qualified health center and nonprofit organization with two locations in Sioux City and one in South Sioux City. With a workforce of more than 350 people, SCHC provides medical, dental, behavioral health and urgent care services to the community.
Respect, teamwork and flexibility
Beaver joined the SCHC team last year. “I was immediately welcomed and made to feel valued,” she said. “People you don’t even know greet you in the hall, ask you your name and what department you’re working in,” she said. “It’s a big team atmosphere.”
After she completed 30 days on the job, Beaver was asked for feedback about the training — what she liked and what could have been done differently. “The HR team and CEO truly wanted to know what I thought about the process,” she said. “They want employees to be happy, and they ask what they can do to make you want to stay.”
Family first
Beaver particularly appreciates SCHC’s family-first commitment. “The philosophy is that the job will be here tomorrow, but if you miss something today for your children or grandchildren, you can’t get that back,” Beaver said. “I was dumbfounded at first that I could arrange to leave early to see my granddaughter’s music performance.”
Serving a diverse community
For support services manager Rosa Alcaraz, working at SCHC brings the gratification that comes with advocating for and helping a diverse population get access to healthcare. She leads the operator and interpreter departments, a position she attained after working her way up in the company. Operators are the first line of communication with patients who call, and interpreters translate for patients who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Pashto and many other languages, she said.
“I love that we go out of our way to meet patients’ needs,” said Alcaraz. “I’ve been here 15 years. That’s how much I love my job.”
Always in the loop
Both Beaver and Alcaraz noted that excellent internal communication at SCHC creates an open, collaborative environment. Regular team huddles, monthly all-staff meetings and frequent email updates keep employees aware of what’s going on. “We know if a department needs help, and we all try to jump in as much as we can,” Alcaraz said.
Beaver said when elected representatives or other special visitors will be on-site, when a team participates in a community event like a cleanup, or when free tickets to the symphony, circus or hockey games are up for grabs, everyone knows.
SCHC makes it easy for their employees to come in to work every day thanks to a caring environment, respectful culture and more.
Generous benefits
Full-time team members who work 30 or more hours per week at SCHC are eligible for medical, dental and vision insurance, paid time off, paid and floating holidays, a retirement plan with a 5% match from the company, tuition assistance, an employee assistance plan, life insurance and more. The benefits plan for part-time employees differs, but includes retirement and paid time off.
“Working here isn’t just a job,” said Beaver. “It’s a way of life geared toward making the community a better place.”
