Healthcare professionals are at the heart of Siouxland Community Health Center. SCHC is a federally qualified health center and nonprofit organization with two locations, one in Sioux City and one in South Sioux City. With a workforce of more than 350 people, SCHC provides medical, dental, behavioral health and urgent care services to the community.
Lisa Beaver, who works in medical billing at SCHC, said the “nurturing environment and culture of respect and caring” at the center make it easy to come to work every day. She feels a deep sense of satisfaction and pride in her job.
Beaver joined the SCHC team in 2024. “I was immediately welcomed and made to feel valued,” she said. “People you don’t even know greet you in the hall, ask you your name and what department you’re working in,” she said. “It’s a big team atmosphere.”
Family-friendly hours
Beaver particularly appreciates SCHC’s family-friendly hours. No one works on Sundays and first-year employees can accrue up to 120 hours off in their first year, as well as enjoy paid holidays.
“The philosophy is that the job will be here tomorrow, but if you miss something today for your children or grandchildren, you can’t get that back,” Beaver said. “I was dumbfounded at first that I could arrange to leave early to see my granddaughter’s music performance.”
Compassionate care for all
For support services manager Rosa Alcaraz, working at SCHC brings the gratification that comes with advocating for and helping all sorts of people get access to healthcare. She leads the operator and interpreter departments, a position she attained after working her way up in the company. Operators are the first line of communication with patients who call, and interpreters translate for patients who speak many other languages, she said.
“I love that we go out of our way to meet patients’ needs,” said Alcaraz, who has been with the organization for over 16 years.
