Communicate effectively. Solve real problems. Lead your team.
You can learn how to do these things — and much more — all online. Plus, it’s affordable.
Wayne State College’s online Master’s Degree in Organizational Management (MSOM) lies at the heart of these efforts to lead teams, shape public policy, manage tech and improve human performance. Through our grad program, you can advance your career, hone your leadership and decision-making skills, and help drive innovation while studying within one of seven focus areas under the MSOM umbrella:
Criminal Justice Administration and Management
Human Resource Management
Human Performance and Wellness Management
Information Technology Management
Public Affairs
Public Relations Management
Sport and Recreation Management
While the seven focus areas are varied in scope, the underlying characteristics that unite them are a core skill set, career flexibility, and the potential for increased salary. The MSOM degree prepares students to take on high-level leadership positions within an existing job or prepares them for a career change. The degree’s versatility prepares graduates for high-impact roles within an organization and ensures they are ready to solve complex challenges and achieve long-lasting career success.
“This is a program for aspiring leaders,” said Ron Loggins, dean of the School of Science, Health and Criminal Justice at Wayne State. “If you are really interested in making your job more robust, advancing to the next level and transitioning from doing the work in the field to managing, the MSOM is a great opportunity to help you realize your goal.”
No matter their specific focus, students enrolled in this graduate program take the same eighteen-hour group of core classes on leadership, communication, organizational behavior and conflict management, before moving on to the more nuanced classes within their specific focus area. Students also have the option to take classes outside their specialty. For example, Loggins said, if someone is running a small business and is enrolled in the HR focus, they may be interested in picking up some of the tech classes that fall under Information Technology Management.
“The degrees are stackable, meaning you can add additional focus areas to the core,” Loggins said. “You have a unique way to build a powerful skills toolbox within the MSOM program, which definitely sets it apart from other graduate programs.”
Another benefit to this program is that up to 15 hours may be transferred in from another regionally accredited graduate institution and applied toward a degree. A total of 36 credit hours are needed to graduate with a MSOM degree.
Loggins said advisors meet with students individually to determine which experience and degree focus would work best for their particular need and situation. Capstone experiences within each focus area vary as well. For example, individuals can use a project at work, enhancing it with the skills they are learning to give them a deliverable that is actually being implemented at their work site. They could also choose to do an internship or a scholarly project.
“This degree path is a slice of the real world,” Loggins said, “and provides a dynamic environment for the participants because they are continually interacting with fellow students as part of projects, communicating on message boards, and connecting with professors on a regular basis. They are being exposed to diverse people and perspectives, just like in the work environment. And this all adds up to becoming a well-rounded and impactful leader.”
