After a heart attack, a patient left the emergency room with a blood thinner prescription priced at more than $500 — far more than he could afford. Once he was referred to the Siouxland Community Health Center pharmacy, he qualified for a sliding-fee program, bringing the cost to under $10.
In another case, a local family of four — including a child dependent on insulin — was spending more than $750 a month on prescription medications. After transferring to SCHC’s pharmacy, their monthly costs dropped significantly, with no compromise in the quality of care.
At SCHC, such stories are not isolated. Instead, they reflect the center’s objective — making medical care accessible to those who might otherwise not be able to afford it. At the heart of that system is a team of healthcare professionals — highly-qualified, patient-centric, compassionate nurses, doctors and pharmacists — whose goal is to ensure that patients get the treatments and medications they need.
SCHC is currently seeking a full-time pharmacist to join its Nebraska Street location in Sioux City. The organization also operates a second on-site pharmacy on Futures Drive in South Sioux City. Both are integral components of SCHC’s network, which brings together medical, behavioral health and dental services under one all-encompassing umbrella.
As a federally qualified health center, SCHC serves an extensive range of patients across the Siouxland region, with a focus on rural residents, uninsured individuals and families with limited income. Since opening in 1992 as a small clinic with just a handful of staff, SCHC has grown into a major community healthcare provider with more than 350 employees. Through that growth, its mission has stayed the same: eliminate barriers, expand access and improve the health and well-being of those who walk through its doors.
The pharmacist role is well-suited for someone who enjoys both detailed clinical precision and dealing directly with patients. Responsibilities include dispensing and compounding medications, reviewing prescriptions for safety and effectiveness, and counseling patients on how to take their medications correctly, including any precautions about adverse effects and drug interactions. Pharmacists also work closely with providers and clinical staff, helping guide medication decisions and supporting treatment plans that fit each patient’s needs.
Beyond direct patient care, pharmacists are also tasked with keeping the pharmacy running smoothly — supporting staff, maintaining safety and compliance standards, and ensuring proper handling of medication and substances. Attention to detail, strong communication skills and sound clinical judgment are essential in this role.
Candidates must hold a pharmacy degree from an accredited program and have an active Iowa pharmacist license. Retail pharmacy experience is preferred, along with basic computer and data entry skills. The position includes some evening hours until 8 p.m. and occasional Saturdays.
At its core, this is a position for those who want their work to reach beyond the counter and to help ensure that patients get precisely the medications they need in a timely and affordable way.
