Tammy Francisco, community relations manager for Mosaic in western Iowa, provided an overview of Mosaic’s services and impact across the region during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Mosaic is a nonprofit organization that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through a whole-person approach focused on independence, community integration, and quality of life.
Francisco explained that Mosaic serves individuals with intellectual disabilities, mental and behavioral health needs, traumatic brain injuries, and autism throughout western Iowa. Services include intermittent habilitation support and the organization’s “Mosaic at Home” shared living program, which places individuals in family-based home settings.
“I want to get to a point where when you walk outside, you see somebody with intellectual disabilities or different challenges, and it’s just part of our world,” Francisco said during the presentation. “I don’t want our persons served to be treated differently. I want them to be accepted.”
Francisco also highlighted Mosaic’s history, which dates back to 1913, and its continued growth across more than 700 communities in 12 states, serving approximately 5,000 individuals.
The presentation emphasized the benefits of Mosaic’s shared living model, which allows individuals to live in family environments rather than traditional group settings. Francisco noted research has shown improved outcomes and stronger independence for individuals participating in the program.
Mosaic will host its annual Partners in Possibilities event on Thursday, May 7, from 8–9 a.m. at Saint John Lutheran Church, 633 Willow Avenue in Council Bluffs. The event will feature stories from individuals and families involved with Mosaic and provide updates on the organization’s mission and programs. Attendance is free, though the event serves as a fundraiser.
