For the past 30 years, one man has been providing youngsters with insight on the inner workings of the human body and the importance of better health.
On Thursday, May 18, and Friday, May 19, Slim Goodbody will bring his Bodyology show to Siouxland.
Thousands of local youngsters are expected to pack the Orpheum Theater during Slim Goodbody's live Bodyology shows, which are being sponsored by St. Luke's Regional Medical Center with cooperation from St. Luke's Children's Miracle Network. Tickets still remain for his two evening presentations; tickets are $5 each and currently on sale at all Sioux City and South Sioux City Hy-Vee Food Stores.
Known for his signature spandex organ outfit, Slim Goodbody has been entertaining children with his unique, enlightening shows for nearly 30 years. His programs currently air on more than 120 public television stations nationwide including Iowa Public Television, and he has authored more than a dozen children's books. In 2003, he received the Parents Choice Award for a Public Broadcasting Station program titled "Life Skills 101."

During his Bodyology shows at the Orpheum, Slim Goodbody will explore the human body along with the health practices necessary to care for it. His one-hour shows are designed to teach healthy habits that last a lifetime. Students will learn firsthand about the human body as well as hygiene, drug and smoking prevention, and obesity.
Nationally, 30 percent of school-age children are considered overweight and 15 percent are estimated to be obese. The number of children with Type II diabetes continues to increase.
Christie Finnegan, director of Marketing at St. Luke's, says Slim Goodbody's show supports St. Luke's mission to improve the health of the Siouxland community.
"St. Luke's is thrilled to be able to touch so many area children and families with Slim Goodbody's message of better health. We realize the importance of bringing innovative events such as the Bodyology show to Sioux City and the impact they can make on people of all ages," says Finnegan.
In addition to the show, Slim Goodbody also provides ancillary materials for teachers and educators via his Web site at http://www.slimgoodbody.com. The materials are designed for use with his live Bodyology show. The Web site also contains information on all of his live shows, links to other health-related Web sites and games for kids.
"The Bodyology show is cross-circular, so it provides a great opportunity for educators in all areas to get involved.
St. Luke's is pleased to be able to supplement schools' lesson plans with Slim Goodbody's story telling, fitness and interactive musical show," adds Finnegan.
To complement the Bodyology show, St. Luke's also organized a Healthy Body Poster Contest for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. To be eligible for the poster contest, students submitted posters that incorporated good nutrition, fitness, drug or smoking prevention, or healthy relationships. Contest winners will be announced during Slim Goodbody's May 19 evening show; the winners will be awarded a prize package from area sponsors and one poster will be selected as the design for a new bookmark, distributed to participating schools in the fall.
