So you've been attending physical therapy for weeks and finally they tell you it's over. Now what? Think back to the beginning - you were injured or had surgery, you were in pain and you weren't feeling well. The doctor referred you to physical therapy. You didn't want to go, but you knew it would get you on the road to recovery. Physical therapy would help you reach goals that, without a trained professional who kept you on task,, you probably would not have achieved on your own. You learned how to get yourself up and go to your scheduled appointment or take time out of your busy day to squeeze in that 45 - 60 minute therapy session. You made sacrifices of time and money to go to physical therapy. Perhaps a sedentary lifestyle prior to your injury was the culprit of the injury itself. You've worked hard, sweated and maybe even shed a few tears and you're starting to feel really good! You're getting beyond the injury repair, you've shown dedication and commitment and have been exercising and recharging your body while getting stronger. Why not use this as the ultimate opportunity to take it to the next level.

You think this sounds like a great idea, but what do you do now? Some people can carry on the dedication and commitment following discharge from physical therapy treatment. Can you? Here are some tips to continue down the road to success. Talk with your physical therapist or physical therapist assistant prior to being discharged from their care. They have been trained to discuss home exercise programs and prepare you for success beyond physical therapy.
Check to see if aquatic therapy is available through your physical therapy office. The water can be a safe and effective environment for exercise. The unique properties of water and immersion have profound physiologic implications in the delivery of therapeutic exercise. Attend one of your PT sessions in the water and ask them to give you some ideas that you can use at a local swimming pool.
Learn what you need to be conscious of regarding your recent injury. Write all of this information down and guard it with your life.
Everyone in the surrounding area is very fortunate - there are fitness facilities and opportunities everywhere, but you can't get to them lying on the couch. Just like physical therapy, you need to make the sacrifices and get after it. If you are not a member already, look into joining a gym. Most facilities offer a personal trainer. Don't be afraid to take this step. You have worked so hard to get yourself where you are - think how easy it can be to keep going from here. You are already used to the sacrifices and you know what it feels like to make and see progress. Be sure to inform your new trainer of your injury and discuss with them what your physical therapist recommended. Be sure to research the facility and what type of certification and education the trainer has achieved. If they do not seem concerned about your injury, they are not the trainer for you. There are many out there and it is your money - you have the right to be picky.
Set some new goals. You've seen how the therapist worked you hard toward short- and long-term goals. Develop and write down your goals. Be sure to define your goals specifically and set a date to accomplish them. For example, I will attend a yoga class by Feb. 10. I will run a 5K race by April 5. I will attend water aerobics twice a week for one month.
One of the best ways to be successful at achieving fitness is to surround yourself with a positive support staff.Find yourself a workout buddy, read books or magazines about the fitness activities you are interested in, don't be afraid to try something new, and step out of your comfort zone. A great idea is to start a journal of your fitness and nutrition activities while you watch yourself continue the transformation just as you did in physical therapy. You are worth every minute and every penny! Good luck!
