Since 1995, Surface Solutions of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, has successfully helped homeowners and commercial property owners revamp their kitchens and bathrooms by offering top quality resurfacing and refacing products and services.
Primarily known for their bathtub resurfacing, Surface Solutions is one of the only businesses in the Siouxland area offering kitchen cabinet refacing as an alternative to cabinet removal and installation.
Cabinet refacing is the quality process of renewing cabinets by removing old doors and drawer fronts. Then the cabinet face frames are resurfaced with prefinished wood veneer and the bottom and sides of the cabinets are resurfaced with prefinished plywood. Ultimately, new doors and drawer fronts are installed. Several other modifications, including upgrading old drawers and slides or replacing a worn-out lazy Susan, can be done at the same time. Regardless of the style of your present kitchen, the newly refaced version can be virtually any style you want. For example, a kitchen with dark cabinetry can become light, clean and stylish following cabinetry refacing in Light American oak. Homeowners have the opportunity to select a wood type and finish, a door style and hardware prior to having their cabinets refaced by Surface Solutions.

Remodeling a kitchen by refacing kitchen cabinets gives the homeowner a new kitchen that can be expected to age gracefully for 20 years or more before having to be updated again. More importantly, the homeowner can have a beautiful new kitchen for a fraction of the cost of ripping everything out and replacing it, said Gary Kaiser, co-owner of Surface Solutions with his wife, Stacy.
He added that cabinet replacement often results in additional costs such as floor and countertop replacement, sheetrock repair, and electrical and plumbing expenses. In addition, it can be disruptive, in some cases leaving homeowners without the use of a room for a couple of weeks to a month.
"With cabinet refacing, in a week or less, you can have a kitchen that's ready to use," Gary said.
Because of the way their home is built, some homeowners may be unable to change the configuration of their kitchen and would have to put their cabinets back in the same place anyway, unless they wanted to build on. He said cabinet refacing is an especially good alternative for homeowners who don't plan to change the configuration of their kitchen.
Surface Solutions recently completed a cabinet refacing job for Cecelia Borchers of Brunsville, Iowa. The original birch kitchen cabinetry was installed in 1972 when Cecelia and her late husband Virgil Borchers built their ranch-style home. Cecelia wanted to lighten up the cabinets and had Surface Solutions reface them with Light American oak door and drawer fronts. She also had new brass hardware added to accent the cabinetry.
"In this kitchen Gary did one heck of a job," said Cecelia, the mother of three children and a retired travel agent. "It only took nine days to complete. Now I have a brand new kitchen."
Cecelia, who likes to cook, bake and entertain, heard about Surface Solutions at the Siouxland Home Show in Sioux City. She would visit the show and pick up pamphlets from the different vendors.
"In March, it was sunny outside, and I said, 'I'm going to do it.' It has always been in the back of my mind," she said.
She contacted Surface Solutions, and they came out to give her an estimate on cabinet refacing. They also brought samples of cabinet fronts and hardware for her to look at so she could pick out what she liked.
Cecelia decided to have her cabinets refaced instead of replaced for a few reasons.
"Cost was one factor. I felt it was more reasonable to have the cabinets refaced. I also didn't want to go through all the bother to have them torn out. The old cabinets are built much better than they are today. In addition, I wasn't changing the layout of my cabinets. Everything remained the same."
Now that her kitchen is done, Cecelia enjoys sitting at her oak kitchen table and taking it all in with her dog, Skipper, a Schnauzer.
"I love, love my kitchen," she said for emphasis. "It's a lot lighter and looks bigger since it has been updated."
Cabinet refacing is just one of the many services offered by Surface Solutions. Surface Solutions also resurfaces cabinets, tile, countertops, showers and bathtubs, and installs acrylic bathtub liners, wall surrounds and the Safeway Step system-all without disrupting your home.
Independently owned and operated by Gary and Stacy Kaiser, Surface Solutions has been successful in the Siouxland area as a result of their ability to make their customers' kitchens and bathrooms look like new without the mess, time and cost of conventional remodeling. Refaced and resurfaced fixtures are displayed in their showroom to give customers an idea of what the final product will look like.
