NORTH SIOUX CITY | The North Sioux City Housing and Redevelopment Commission is looking for families wishing to relocate in the community.
The Harvest Bend development on Campbell Street can be the perfect place for folks anxious to set down some roots, according to commission member Tom Berkemier.
"We have 17 lots there," he said. "We just need houses to fill it."
Two have been sold to Habitat for Humanity. The others are priced at $12,500, plus $1,100 closing costs.
"We've made the land affordable for people to build whatever house they like," Berkemier said, adding that single-family dwellings, duplexes and townhouses are preferable.
Berkemier said families can have a home custom built on the lot or go through Habitat for Humanity. The South Dakota Governor's Home Program will sell pre-built homes at a lower cost to those who meet certain economic requirements.
A North Sioux City resident for more than 30 years, Berkemier said the area is ideal for first-time homeowners or families tired of renting.
"People think this is open just for South Dakota residents, but it's not," he said. "I'm sure there are plenty of people in Iowa and Nebraska would like to see what South Dakota has to offer."
Berkemier said Harvest Bend lot prices are lower than in other parts of southern Union county.
"We certainly think the price is right," he said.
In the past, the North Sioux City Housing and Redevelopment Commission has built an affordable housing development for seniors and facilitated the construction of two others in McCook Lake.
Right now, Berkemier said, the commission is concentrating on families.
"Every community must look towards the future," he said. "We think North Sioux City is a place where families can relocated and flourish."
