SIOUX CITY | Siouxland has another place to find that perfect bed.
Mattress Firm, a Houston-based company, recently moved to the region in November of 2013, when they opened their first regional location in South Dakota. They expanded into Sioux City last fall.
For the corporate owners, moving to South Dakota was a trip home.
“All of the original founders are native to South Dakota,” said Paul Hollister, managing partner of the regional franchise. “We viewed it as a grand homecoming. We had a big celebration.”
Within a year they expanded to Sioux City. The new store at 5101 Sergeant Road in Lakeport Commons opened in October 2014, just before the holidays.
The decision to expand into Sioux City was an “easy decision,” Hollister said, with the population being one of the largest in proximity to Sioux Falls. There are now six locations in the franchise.
“Sioux City isn’t as competitive as far as buying a mattress goes,” Hollister said. “And what we noticed is that people respond to how we do business.”
That successful local response is due to their consultative approach to business, Hollister said. They ask a lot of questions to find out why the customer isn’t happy with their current mattress and what type of mattress would fit their body.
“No two people are alike, no two back problems are alike,” Hollister said. “What we find is that it’s so unique to that individual that we have to be a good consultant.”
Once that’s determined, they then match one of their five mattress styles with whatever price tag the customer would prefer.
Some of their top brands include Tempurpedic, Sealy, Hampton and Rhodes and Stearns and Foster.
Hollister said to expects to open another Mattress Firm location in Sioux City by at least the end of this year. They are currently looking for a site, with a goal of possibly opening by the summer.
“We think there are some other good retail areas to put it,” Hollister said.
Based in Houston, the chain has more than 1,700 company-operated and franchised stores in 36 states. The next closest stores are two locations in Sioux Falls.
