SIOUX CITY | Firefighter gear hang on a hook, dalmatian-spots dominate the tables and a sandwich called the Hook & Ladder figures prominently on the menu.
According to franchise owner Eric Engelstad, Firehouse Subs takes the role of firefighters and other rescue workers very seriously.
Indeed, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation provides funding for life-saving equipment for first responders in communities served by the nationwide chain.
"Our guests can help out by donating money in one of our canisters, our pickle barrels or by rounding up on their order," Engelstad explained. "It's a great feeling to help your community."
Engelstad, who owns two Sioux Falls, S.D. Firehouse subs, opened a new 5008 Sergeant Road location at Sioux City's Lakeport Commons in May.
While he acknowledges civic involvement is important, Firehouse subs is mainly in the business of making mile-high submarine sandwiches.

"What sets us apart from other sub shops is the quality of our meats and cheeses," he said. "We steam both before putting it in bread that's been toasted separately for optimal taste."
Founded in Jacksonville, Fla. by former firefighter brothers Chris and Robin Sorensen more than 20 years ago, Firehouse Subs has more than 800 locations in 42 states and Puerto Rico.
Engelstad said the chain's best-selling sub, Hook and Ladder (smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, Monterrey Jack cheese served on a freshly made roll), is also the oldest.
"People can't get enough of it," he said. "It's our original sandwich and still our most popular."
Yet customers can also choose such specialty subs as the Firehouse Meatball (Italian meatballs, provolone, zesty marinara); New York Steamer (YSDA Choice corned beef, pastrami, provolone, deli mustard, mayo and Italian dressing); and the under 500 calorie Sriracha Beef (hot USDA Choice roast beef, Monterrey Jack, spicy Sriracha sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion).
"I think people are getting tired of the same old fast food choices," Engelstad said. "Instead, they want fresher, healthier options."
Which is why Firehouse Subs also has several chopped salad options, a kid-friendly menu as well as an award-winning Firehouse chili.
"As the temps cool, I think more people will want the option of a nice, hot sandwich served with chili," Engelstad said. "Our meals are very filling."
Looking across his dining room following a lunch rush, Engelstad said he's pleased by the initial success of Firehouse Subs.
"The one thing our customers comment on is the mural," he said of the large-scale artwork depicting a fire truck parked next to the Siouxland Veterans Memorial Bridge. "That art demonstrates our commitment to the community we serve."
