Seasonal standbys
Marissa Merchant and Melissa Flynn at Spaces Interior Design in North Sioux City suggest classic Christmas color combinations – think silver and gold, red and green, blue and white – to spruce up areas of your home for the holidays.
“The holidays are centered around traditions,” Flynn said. “To be able to mix heirloom pieces with newer styles can be tricky but a similar color palette helps. And of course, you can never go wrong with shimmer and twinkling lights.”
A wire wreath from CB2, a home décor line carried by Spaces Interior Design, offers a festive framework to decorate with lights, bulbs, garlands and cards. Plus, it can be changed with the seasons.

Make it a handcrafted Christmas
For the Holiday Tour of Homes, Lisa Kalaher, owner of Mod House Interiors, decorated a white iridescent tree with bright, multicolored wool felt balls, strung together on thin gray yarn – a modern play on the old popcorn and cranberry garland of the past.
She also created handmade paper ornaments. Both crafts provide a budget friendly fix if you want to include trending colors of the year into a tree.
“Paper and felt ornaments are easy to construct and can add lots of color and interesting shapes and textures to your tree,” Kalaher said. “You can also buy small photo frames that can be hung on the tree, let your children create unique artwork or have them draw pictures of the family. The uniform frames will pull the tree together and the ornaments will be a priceless memory in the future.”

Simple inspiration
“We've seen a return to simplicity a bit for the upcoming season in decor and elsewhere,” Flynn said. “Your Christmas tree doesn't have to be a big Douglas fir. It can be simple branches mounted from the ceiling. Gift wrapping in brown paper with twine and berries, clean line ornaments, etc.”
Brown paper packaging can be embellished and personalized with stickers, stamps, handmade bows, pine cones and greens for an overall look that ranges from rustic to shabby chic.

Start a new tradition
Growing up, Kalaher’s received one special ornament each year. It might symbolize a trip, an event or interest. She continues the tradition with her family. The stocking stuffer sized gift is usually unwrapped on Christmas Eve and added to the tree.
“Ornaments are a good way to tell a story or share a memory,” she said. “A fun way to incorporate this idea is to get unique ornaments and use them as decoration on your table and let your guest each take one home.”

Add festive finishes
“Don't forget your other senses for finishing touches on your home for the holidays,” Flynn said. “Cider or scented candles, soft lighting, background carols and fuzzy blankets and pillows are added bonuses.”
Candles, candles, candles. ‘Tis the season. New at CB2, a home décor line carried by Spaces Interior Design, the chick candle holders in silver add a little fun and sparkle to any table setting. Many options are available. Find the one the fits your design style.

Copper boom
“Mixing metals is big trend for 2015, but it's something we've actually been seeing in Christmas decorations for years,” Kalaher said.
Gold and silver have been viewed as a more traditional color combination of the season but can be used with natural, traditional or contemporary holiday décor.
Adding champagne infuses a level of elegance, and the soft gold hue can stand on its own or be mixed other any number of other colors.
“To update this mixed metal look even more, add copper,” Kalaher said. “This gives the metals a dramatic pop.”
