SIOUX CITY | Keeley Ruring, a high school freshman from Moville, Iowa, is glad the Ulta Beauty store opened in June 2015 in Sioux City, in what she called an accessible location on the city's edge near other shopping.
"It has a variety of products at reasonable prices. They have a salon and make-up professionals there in the store to assist with any questions or to give you a makeover," Ruring said.
Ulta Beauty is a national retailer that provides a one-stop shop for beauty products and services at 5747 Sunnybrook Drive, in the Sunnybrook Village shopping area. The store features 20,000 beauty products, representing some 500 brands, 4,000 testers and more than 1,000 scents.
To celebrate its grand opening, Ulta gave exclusive gifts to the first 100 shoppers, and free makeovers were given that weekend. Ulta Beauty Associate Manager Antoinette Samayoa said the first year in Sioux City has gone well.
"We have had really good sales. We are always busy. We have a lot of customers from all over Siouxland, from all the little towns. We've been busy and hitting our goals," Samayoa said.
Samayoa said repeat customers have been key to the business.
"You can get a facial, you can get your hair done, your makeup done, the whole nine yards," Manager Ginger Wiese said.
While loading up on top brands of cosmetics and skin care products, shoppers also can spend time in the store's full-service salon. The salon includes a "Brow Bar" that specializes in eyebrow waxing, trimming and other services.
"We really educate the customer, too, on brow care," Samayoa said.
Samayoa said the Bare Minerals makeup line is popular with the age-30-and-older demographic, while Urban Decay has been embraced by younger patrons at Ulta. She said customers asked for Chanel perfume products, so the store got permission to begin offering that this month.
Ulta operates 765 retail stores in 47 states. The Sioux City store has about 30 full-time and part-time employees.
Ulta Beauty is part of many new 2015 pieces in the Sunnybrook Plaza area north of Greatland Target. Also in that section is Panda Express, Bed Bath & Beyond and Marshalls
Formed in 2002, Sunnybrook Plaza is a large and growing commercial and retail development at the intersection of Sunnybrook Drive and Sergeant Road, with access from the U.S. Highway 20 bypass. Besides Greatland Target, it's anchored by Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse.
