SIOUX CITY -- A number of quick service restaurant chains expanded into Siouxland or opened new locations over the past year.Â
Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a Wichita-Kan.-based chain best known for its classic fare of comfort food, opened a 5842 Sunnybrook Drive location in August 2024.Â
The 3,460-square-foot eatery has space for 104 diners, with additional seating on its patio and drive-thru service.
A new Starbucks recently opened the 29-acre Northern Valley Crossing, located near the intersection of Outer Belt and Floyd Boulevard.
The coffee chain anchors a new strip mall that also includes Sioux City's first Jersey Mike's. Founded in Point Pleasant, N.J., in 1956, the national chain featuring made-to-order submarine sandwiches.
A standalone McDonald's restaurant also will be opening along Floyd Boulevard in the coming months.
Chick-fil-A, which operates a standalone restaurant near Southern Hills Mall, announced in March 2024 it plans to build a new location on Sioux City's north side. The new eatery would be built at 830 Hamilton Blvd., where a vacant Cricket Wireless store currently sits.
Hamilton Boulevard has proven to be a popular location for eateries specializing in chicken.
Wingstop, part of a Garland, Texas-based chain of Buffalo chicken restaurants with a 1930s aviation theme, opened a Sioux Citys store in a strip mall at 1921 Hamilton Blvd. in the spring of 2024.
A convenience store chain, Kwik Star, entered the Sioux City market in late 2024, with the opening of a store at the corner of Business Highway 75 and Glenn Avenue, not far from the Sergeant Floyd Monument.
Kwik Stars are known for selling snacks, baked goods and on-the-go foods and drinks. In January 23025, the privately-held La Crosse, Wisconsin-based chain announced it will open a Sergeant Bluff location on the site of a previous gas station. A second Sioux City location also is in the works, at the site of a now-demolished Rodeway Inn along Hamilton Boulevard, at its intersection with Interstate 29. Â
