SIOUX CITY | Free yoga in a hub of holistic healing.
It’s what Erin Kuehl imagined from the beginning.
As her business stretched to Pearl Street, she welcomed the tired, poor, cross-legged masses longing to breathe free. Since May, there has been an hour-long yoga class every Sunday at the new downtown studio, offered at no charge.
“This is our way of making sure yoga is accessible for everyone, regardless of their financial situation,” Kuehl said. “The reason that rings so true is because I was a stay-at-home mom and I couldn’t afford to go to classes.”
After spending almost a decade out of the workforce with her five children, she opened Evolve Yoga & Wellness in 2012 as the sole instructor. She’s added more than a dozen practitioners to her team and doubled her class offerings with the opening of a second location, at 411 Pearl St.
Kuehl is leasing more than 2,000 square feet of a two-story building that formerly housed alainn, a women’s clothing boutique. The space got a makeover to include a yoga studio on the main floor, as well as three healing rooms upstairs.
According to Kuehl, Evolve had outgrown its original location in the lower level of Sioux City Physical Therapy at 2802 Castles Gate Drive.
“There wasn’t room for one more mat in some classes,” she said. “It’s really an amazing practice to get that many people in a room, but at the same time, I was losing customers.”
The wellness center was offering more than 20 yoga and meditation classes a week, and with those filling up, she knew it was time to look for something more.
She always wanted to have a downtown studio. She found the perfect spot on Pearl Street.
“This area needs to be revitalized and there need to be new, young life and opportunity that’s not just bar-hopping,” she said. “There’s got to be something else.”
The new space opens up all kinds of possibilities.
Now, the Wellness Center at Evolve offers a range of services for holistic healing including massage, Reiki, hypnotherapy, Shamanic healing, private yoga sessions, nutritional coaching, reflexology, transition coaching and custom healing plans.
There are more classes, too, anywhere from five to 10 a day, and Evolve offers a 200-hour teacher training program.
With her business thriving, Kuehl is able to do what she’s always wanted: offer at least one yoga class for free.
“This is not just a yoga studio ... This is a place for you to get reconnected with yourself and the world around you in a way that feels meaningful.”
