SIOUX CITY | If you're looking for one of the best views Sioux City has to offer, make your way up to War Eagle Monument at sundown. Remembered as a lifelong advocate of harmony and camaraderie, War Eagle was buried at the top of the bluff overlooking the Missouri River Valley.Â
Born around 1785, War Eagle was a riverboat guide on the upper Mississippi and delivered messages for the American Fur Company. Many lasting bonds were created between War Eagle and area American settlers, which set a tone of friendship that spread through the area. War Eagle received a silver medal from President Martin Van Buren in 1837 in honor of his work in Washington, D.C. to negotiate peace treaties.Â
Chief War Eagle's Grave Historical Marker is located inside War Eagle Park in Sioux City.Â
