SIOUX CITY | After 20 years of working as a licensed independent social worker, Robin Capers decided to open her own office.
Three other therapists and a parenting coordinator also work at Family Wellness Associates, 1115 Fifth St., which started accepting patients in January.
"I wanted to be downtown, but I really wanted my own building and a parking lot," Capers said. "When I walked into this place, it had room to expand and it had an industrial look. I really wanted to do a modern, industrial building."
Family Wellness Associates provides a wide range of mental health services for individuals and families. Behavioral health services include anger management, conflict resolution, behavior modification, grief and loss and chemical dependency. Specialty areas include parent child interaction therapy, dual diagnosis, parenting coordination and eye movement desensitization & reprocessing -- a therapy growing in popularity for treating post-traumatic stress disorder.
"We kind of hit all the different aspects of therapy," Capers said.
Executive Home Builders designed the industrial warehouse, which was gutted. Family Wellness Associates is currently using 3,000 square feet of the 10,000 square-foot property. Capers plans to renovate an additional 2,700 square feet in a few months. That space will house a community-based program.
"I wanted it to be something that was very welcoming and on trend," Capers said of the building.
The spacious lobby pays homage to the elements with a fireplace, waterfall and fans. A large piece of limestone flanked by a gray paper shag rug serves as a coffee table. A red, abstract floral painting adds a pop of color to the beige walls. While they're waiting, patients can watch a flat screen TV or use the Wi-Fi network.
Just behind the front desk is another small seating area and a coffee bar. Offices are located on each side of a hallway and in the addition. There are 10 offices total in the main building and two in the addition. Capers said one of the offices is currently being rented. She hopes to rent out one more office.
"We have somebody who rents space who is a bilingual mental health counselor," Capers said. "That's really nice to have her share space with us."
